Almost Everything is a Choice

A few months ago, I spoke to someone who is looking to buy $89,000 worth of windows for her house.

$89,000!!!

I know she doesn’t live with Bruce Wayne or live here, so … why … $89,000?

As we were talking, she told me a little bit more of the story. Like there are discounts on the windows to bring the total down to $59,000. Also, she is very concerned about quality and is going to be buying windows from one of the most expensive companies in the area.

I was already intrigued by the story of the $59,000 windows, but her next sentence really piqued my attention. She mentioned that there were financing opportunities available and then said:

“Is there anyone that wouldn’t finance these windows?”

Umm … yes.

This got me thinking:

Sometimes, it is necessary to realize that we don’t HAVE to do something. We don’t HAVE to finance $59,000 worth of windows through a window company’s finance department. Instead, we are making a CHOICE with almost everything that we do. Sometimes there are even more than two choices available.

Just standing there talking to her, I was able to think of several choices:

  • Buy windows from another (less expensive) company. I bought ten small windows a few years ago for about $400 per window.
  • Save up for a few years and pay cash for these windows. There are usually discounts for paying cash and the windows don’t all need to be replaced today.
  • Sell the house. This is kind of a drastic move, but it is way less drastic than taking out $59,000 in debt for windows.
  • Buy storm windows or other covers to put over the old windows to extend their life.

I know that when I think about all of the things that I “have to do”, I realize that I am really CHOOSING to do them. I also know that if I eliminate or change some of the things that I “have to do”, then my life could become significantly better … or it could become significantly worse.

We are just one choice away from significantly changing our lives.

For my family and I, a choice that we recently made was to sell our large house and move into a smaller one.

More about that later…

What is one difficult choice that you made recently that significantly changed your life? Or, what is one choice that you could make??? Let us know in the comments.
