Just Sign Up For It

Sometimes you need to sign up for something even if you are not quite ready for it.

This past weekend, I traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana with my wife to run the Monumental Marathon.

We both ended up running great times in the marathon. Laura ran her best marathon time since 2012 and I had my best time since 2007, one year after my oldest son was born.

Besides just running well, we also had a great weekend in Indianapolis, enjoying some of the great sights and restaurants throughout the city.

For me, this marathon was an extremely emotional return to running. As I was running through the last quarter mile or so, I ended up breaking down in tears. Usually my running just leads to extreme joy (and a lot of pain), but never really tears.

However, this marathon represented my return to road racing from a battle with Achilles Tendinitis that I struggled with for 4 years. Although I have run a trail marathon and even a 100 kilometer race earlier this year, running a road marathon truly was my return.

Of course, the reason that I had this emotional return to road running this weekend, was that I actually got the courage to sign up for this race earlier this summer.

I also ran a lot!

But just signing up provided me with a lot of motivation to train and compete.

So in this super short article, I want to encourage you to sign up for something this week. Is there something that scares you? Something that will motivate you to get stronger, fitter, or smarter?

Will signing up allow you to get better at something that you do already, or encourage you to start a brand new activity? Either way, let’s sign up for it today!

I am about to sign up for something pretty crazy! Let us know what you sign up for in the comments below.

And thanks for reading!

Thanks, Dan! I think that my most recent signup could be the craziest of them all. The premise of the race is that I have to run ~4 miles every single hour, until there is only one person left. I believe that the winner last year ended up running 104 miles!

The only time I really lost it running a marathon was Marine Corp in DC. I saw a group of five runners ahead of me in formation. One running at each corner of a fifth wheel chair marathoner. They were in full battle uniform, heavy packs, military boots, and two of them had something else strapped to their packs. They were carrying the prosthetic legs of their wounded warrior brother racing in the wheelchair. I cried like a baby at his sacrifice and at their love.

Wow! What a moving experience! My wife ran that marathon in 2017. She said that it was an extremely emotional experience for her as well.
