You’ve Already Done the Toughest Part

They say that saving your first $100,000 is the toughest. Or saving your first $1,000,000. Or your first $10,000,000. Or any other impossibly large number of dollars that wealthy people like to talk about.

I completely agree with them. Personally, my wife and I have a net worth between $100,000 and $1,000,000, so I would say something stupid like “Saving our first $100,000 was the toughest. Each additional $100,000 wasn’t as bad!”

Although what I just said is completely true, it doesn’t help people who aren’t in my situation. Maybe it doesn’t help you if you are living paycheck to paycheck or if you are in huge amounts of debt or if you have only saved $600 for retirement.

“Yup, saving $100,000 is the toughest part because I’ll never ever do it,” you may be thinking.

However, maybe you’ve already done the toughest part. Right now, you may have $35 in your bank account. Don’t worry … that $35 will be the toughest amount of money that you ever will save.

I guarantee that the next $35 will be easier. And the next $35 will be easier than that. Soon, you may look up and find that $350 was easier to save than that first $35. And then $3,500. And then …

Well, you get the picture.

You’ve already done the hard part. And any small successes that you have will continue to compound as you learn more and more about money.

Reading a book about how someone buys 80-unit apartment complexes and lives off of this income may just make you frustrated right now. However, you should just keep reading about it. Keep reading about people who are a little bit ahead of you in your journey to financial success as well as people who are way ahead of you.

Get frustrated with them, but then take a second and learn from their story. What small things can you do to replicate some of their success?

Keep reading and learning! Start side hustles, work your way out of debt, and go to work with a purpose everyday.

I’ll be honest with you … it’s never going to be easy to save a lot of money. However, you’ve already done the toughest part!

True – a journey of 1,000 kilometres (I use the metric system) begins with one step. The first step is the hardest. We go hiking. The hardest part is getting in the car and driving to the mountain. But once you start walking it is just a matter of one step in front of the other until you reach the peak.

So true! I love to run, but it can be real tough to get out there sometimes. However, once I am outside, the running comes easy!
