Don’t Waste Your Life by Waiting

When my oldest son was about one year old, I used to read him 3 books before naptime (when I was at home) and 3 books before bedtime.

We read a LOT of books!

One of his favorite books was called “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” by Dr. Seuss. He absolutely loved this book … so much so that we both memorized large portions of the book. One of my favorite passages in this book (out of many wonderful passages) is the following:

headed, I fear toward a most useless place.
The Waiting Place …
… for people just waiting.

NO!
That’s not for you!

I was reminded of this passage when I left work at around 2:50 one day and saw a line-up of 10-20 cars outside an elementary school with parents in them to pick up their kids. The problem is, school doesn’t get done until 3:25. So these parents will be waiting for 35 minutes or more to pick up their kids!

There are many other examples of people waiting for no good purpose. I even occasionally find myself waiting in a long line or waiting for my kid’s soccer practice to finish. Even though I am waiting, I don’t have to waste this time.

Waiting is inevitable … but it doesn’t have to be pointless.

One of the many things that I like to do while I am waiting is to work out. I can easily run 6-8 miles during a baseball practice or go for a 15-mile bike ride during a soccer practice. I am a little bit sweaty when my kids are done with their practices, but no one seems to mind.

I also love to read while I am waiting. I usually get free books from the library and I will take one with me if I know that I have to wait for a few minutes. I also use an app called Hoopla where I can download e-books, audio books, or regular books directly to my phone from the local library.

How do you spend your time while you are waiting? Let us know in the comments below.

And thanks for reading!
